Winters, the joyous season brings on the festivity and party mode. It’s the cold weather and all you want is to be warm and cozy. The cold air and the heating systems both work synergistically to elevate eye problems during winter. Little moisture in the air, fog, and a shorter duration of sunlight are some of the reasons that hamper vision and puts strain on the eyes. A few of the problems that one faces when it comes to eyes during winters are:
1. DRY EYES
The cold breeze dries the eyes when outside. Not only this, but the different heating appliances such as heaters, blower, and centralized heating system used during winters also dries the eyes when indoors. This leads to a burning sensation in the eyes, watery eyes, and mucus that glue shuts the eye during sleep.
What can be done?
Firstly, ensure that your eyes are not directly in the way of the warm air coming out of the heating appliance. Then, using a warm cotton pad on the eyes for a few minutes will help your eyes create the moisture that they need and help soothe the itchy, irritated, and swollen eyes.
2. ITCHY EYES
The cold weather can also make your eyes extremely itchy and make it difficult for you to do your work. All you would want to do is vigorously rub your eyes which is not good for the eyes.
What can be done?
Keeping the eyes hydrated can help with this problem. Using hydrating eye drops will bring you relief from the itchiness.
3. LIGHT SENSITIVITY
In hilly areas, the sunlight reflects from the ice surface or snow, which increases the amount of sunlight that reaches the eyes. This can lead to a condition known as “snow blindness”. If you have sensitive eyes then, the sunlight causes more blinking, discomfort, and tearing.
What can be done?
UV protection sunglasses will protect the eyes from sunlight and also the drying effects of cold wind.
4. INCREASED CHANCES OF INFECTION
Winter leads to dry eyes and tear production is highly reduced. Thereby, the chance of infections increases.
Red eyes can be due to tiredness, rubbing of eyes due to itchiness or dryness, tearing, or infection.
What can be done?
Using a humidifier will help with the restoration of moisture and hence, will combat dry eyes. Thereby, also helping with eye infections.
5. STRAINED EYES
Decreased natural sunlight and decreased visibility due to fog leads to an increase in eye strain and make the eyes tired. Eye strain can also trigger a headache. Dim light also strains the eye while reading or working on your electronics.
What can be done?
Working in a well-lighted room and wearing blue light-blocking eyeglasses can be the solution to this problem. Driving can be troublesome during winter, make sure your eyes are not irritated and if it is so, it is recommended to not drive. Also, wearing glasses with an anti-reflective coating can help with the glare at night and with the reflecting light during the day.
