Implantable Collamer lens (ICL) eye surgery is a mildly invasive procedure in which an artificial or ICL lens is permanently implanted in the eye to treat conditions such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness, and astigmatism. The lens is placed between the natural lens of the eye and the iris.
What are the ICL lenses made up of?
They are made up of collamer (collagen and plastic).
What are the advantages of ICL?
- Corrects myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism and eliminates the need of wearing corrective eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses.
- Fast recovery
- Eliminates the risk of dry eyes.
- Great night vision as well.
Who are the candidates for ICL surgery?
If you have a thin or irregular cornea, you cannot get LASIK to correct your vision. Then, ICL is the procedure that is suited for you.
Who are not good candidates for ICL surgery?
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Younger than 21 years old or older than 45 years of age
- Medical conditions that inhibit wound healing, or any other chronic disease
- The minimum requirement for endothelial cell count is not met
You should inform the doctor about your medical history and conditions so that they can provide you with the precautions that have to be undertaken before undergoing ICL surgery or to determine if you are fit for the surgery or not.
How long the procedure takes?
The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes. It is performed under local anaesthesia. After a few hours, you can go back home. One eye is done at a time. After a few days, another eye is done just to be on the safer side.
How invasive is ICL surgery?
A small incision is made in the eye for the insertion of the lens. The lens is very thin, so it could be unfolded once inside the eye. The incision will be closed after the placement of the lens.
What needs to be done after the ICL surgery?
Oral medications or eye drops will be prescribed by your ophthalmologist for pain. Follow-up has to be done as asked for the checking of progress and the examination of recovery.
Rest for a week has to be taken and eye strain has to be avoided for at least 5-7 days.
ICL is a very safe procedure but it is advised to get it done by the best ophthalmologist. If not done properly, it may cause complications such as glaucoma, vision loss, early cataracts, blurry vision, cloudy cornea, eye infection, and retinal detachment. Nidhi multispecialty eye hospital in Agra is one of the best eye hospitals to get ICL surgery. They have the best ophthalmologists for all your eye needs.
